Things You Need to Prepare on How to Get Coffee Stains Out of Carpet

Check the following basic supplies and be sure to prepare them before starting to get coffee stains out of your carpet.

  • Clean cloths or clean towels (use white so you can see actual coffee stains)
  • Regular liquid dish soap
  • Coldwater/warm water
  • Any carpet stain remover or cleaning solution of your choice

5 Tips on How to Get Coffee Stains Out of Carpet

1. You need to lightly wet the stain with warm water so as to loosen the dried coffee.

Blotting the area with a dry white cloth or paper towel is your next step, beginning at the edges of the stain. Then moving inward to prevent the color from seeping into the surrounding fibers of the carpet.

Go on with wetting and blotting the stain until you are no longer getting any coffee from the carpet onto your cloth. You can do this to remove fresh coffee stains from your carpet.

2. Use a carpet stain remover or make your own cleaning solution, especially for old coffee stains.

You can utilize supplies you already have at home. You need not spend on expensive commercial products. There are homemade coffee stain removers that you can use to remove coffee stains effectively.

  • Dish soap plus vinegar–You can combine one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and a tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water in a bowl. Stir the solution.
  • Baking soda on your carpet–Mix three parts of water and one-part baking soda into the coffee spilled on your carpet. Allow it to dry then vacuum up. Just repeat as necessary especially if stains are still present.
  • Hydrogen peroxide– If you have a white or light-colored carpet, make a hydrogen peroxide solution to get coffee stains out of the carpet. Mix one tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide and three tablespoons of warm water. But try to test the solution first, as it may bleach your carpet.
  • Lemon juice–Like hydrogen peroxide, do a patch test first as this causes discoloration, too. Make a lemon juice stain remover by squeezing a fresh lemon or two. Mix about a quarter of a cup of juice with two cups of lukewarm water. Transfer it into a spray bottle then apply.

3. Apply the cleaner with a clean cloth or towel.

You can blot from the edges of the stain and then move inward. Dip the cloth back as needed. Blot the stain with a dry cloth or towel to get rid of the stain from the carpet fibers.

4. If the coffee spills have cream or sugar, combine one capful of enzyme laundry detergent and one cup of warm water in a container. Blend it well by stirring. Dab the cleaning solution with a new cloth onto the old coffee stain. This will help break down the stickiness of the cream and sugar.

5. Use cool water to rinse the carpet.

Blot up as much liquid as possible with a dry cloth or towel. Then, allow the carpet to air dry. Be sure that the affected area has dried completely.

Check These Extra Tips

Read the following few extra tips on how to get coffee stains out of carpet:

  • Just blot, and avoid scrubbing. With scrubbing, you will just press the coffee stain deeper into the fibers of the carpet. This will make the stains harder to get out.
  • Dry it first. It is only natural to clean a coffee stain right away on your first attempt. If it fails and before you try again, be sure that the carpet is fully dry.
  • Use non-spill coffee cups as much as possible. You can find and buy these in most dollar stores at really low prices.
